Egg Color Expectation
This pen produces beautifully dark eggs in the Level 6–8 range. While we always include the darkest eggs available, not every egg in your order will be a Level 7 or 8.
Our Black Copper Marans are a slow, intentional project here on the homestead, guided by a deep love for rich chocolate-brown eggs, calm dispositions, and the steady work of improvement over time. This listing includes six (6) fresh hatching eggs, collected daily and handled gently to give them the best possible beginning.
Bonus eggs included when the hens allow it.
This iconic French heritage breed is best known for its glossy black plumage, warm copper accents, and its ability to lay some of the darkest eggs in the poultry world. In our pens, egg color comes first. Many of our deepest chocolate layers show little to minimal coppering, a choice made deliberately in favor of egg depth rather than show-perfect feathering. While we continue working toward the Standard of Perfection (SOP), these birds are not offered as exhibition quality.
Eggs from this pen range from deep brown to velvety chocolate, often decorated with darker speckling, marbling, or subtle surface texture. Some hens reliably lay Level 8 eggs, while others settle into the Level 6–7 range. When packing orders, we carefully select the darkest eggs available at the time, though natural variation means each clutch carries its own mix of shades.
Copper expression throughout the flock varies from hen to hen. Some wear heavier copper, while others appear nearly solid black. Many of our least coppered hens are among our darkest layers, and this balance reflects the heart of this program. Improving copper expression is an ongoing goal, and we continue to refine the line while protecting the egg color we value so deeply. The rooster in this pen hatched from a Level 8 egg and was chosen to support continued progress.
Egg color genetics are complex and can shift with age, season, and individual inheritance. For this reason, there is no guarantee as to the shade of egg your pullets will eventually lay, only the promise that this line is built with dark eggs in mind.
If you’re drawn to deep browns, patient progress, and eggs that feel like they belong on a wooden counter beside a cup of coffee, these Marans carry that kind of magic.
Disclaimer
Our birds are raised with care and intention, emphasizing gentle temperaments, steady productivity, and overall usefulness within a balanced flock. We thoughtfully work our lines toward the breed Standard of Perfection (SOP) over time, while keeping health, practicality, and livability at the heart of our breeding goals. These birds are not offered as show or exhibition quality, but are well suited for home flocks, hobby breeders, and small-scale breeding projects.
Eggs are collected daily and handled with care, coming from healthy, well-maintained breeding stock here on the homestead. Each egg is stored properly prior to shipment or local pickup to give it the best possible start.
While fertility is monitored, hatching eggs are always a bit of a leap of faith. Once eggs leave the homestead, hatch rates and outcomes depend on factors beyond our control, including shipping conditions and individual incubation practices. By purchasing hatching eggs, you acknowledge these natural risks and understand that hatch and fertility cannot be guaranteed.
